
"Angels Unawares" Sculpture
A bus from the Diocese of Madison had the opportunity to visit the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, MN on Aug. 16 to view a replica of the "Angels Unawares" sculpture. "Angels Unawares" is a sculpture commissioned by the Vatican and blessed by Pope Francis in Sept. 2019. It now resides in St. Peter Square at the Vatican. This epic 20 foot long sculpture depicts 140 refugees packed on a a small boat. Sculptor Timothy Schmalz of the Toronto area was inspired by the Letter to the Hebrews 13:2 encouraging followers of Jesus to "show hospitality to strangers, for thererby some have entertained angels unawares." Pope Francis' priorities were revealed in his first trip as Pope to the Italian island of Lampedusa to bless and engage refugees. Angels Unawares inspires our obligation to entertain angels.
